Certified Layer of Protection Analysis Professional/Manager (CLPAP)™/(CLPAM)™
The Certified Layer of Protection Analysis Professional/Manager (CLPAP)™/(CLPAM)™ certification program is a globally relevant and technically specialized qualification designed for professionals seeking to build or advance careers in process safety, risk assessment, and hazard analysis. In high-risk industries such as oil & gas, petrochemicals, chemicals, and energy, ensuring effective risk reduction is critical to protecting people, assets, and the environment. Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) is a widely used semi-quantitative risk assessment methodology that evaluates hazards and ensures sufficient independent protection layers (IPLs) are in place. This program equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to conduct, manage, and validate LOPA studies effectively.
Modern industrial operations involve complex systems where hazards must be systematically identified, analyzed, and controlled. Professionals must be able to define credible scenarios, assess consequences, evaluate risk tolerance, and determine the adequacy of protection layers. The CLPAP™/CLPAM™ program develops strong analytical capability, technical understanding, and practical expertise in LOPA methodologies, enabling participants to make informed decisions on risk reduction. It also emphasizes compliance with international safety standards, documentation practices, and continuous improvement of safety systems.
LOPA professionals play a critical role in enhancing process safety by ensuring that adequate safeguards are in place to prevent or mitigate hazardous events. They contribute to reducing operational risks, improving system reliability, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Graduates of the CLPAP™/CLPAM™ program will be equipped to conduct LOPA studies with precision, consistency, and strategic insight.
Certification Program Objectives:
Upon completing the Certified Layer of Protection Analysis Professional/Manager (CLPAP)™/(CLPAM)™ program, participants will be able to:
- Understand LOPA Fundamentals – Apply core concepts, principles, and methodology of Layer of Protection Analysis.
- Identify and Analyze Risk Scenarios – Define credible scenarios, assess initiating events, and evaluate consequences.
- Apply Risk Tolerance Criteria – Determine acceptable risk levels and evaluate whether risks meet organizational or regulatory thresholds.
- Evaluate Independent Protection Layers (IPLs) – Identify, assess, and validate the effectiveness of protection layers in reducing risk.
- Document and Report LOPA Studies – Prepare structured reports and maintain clear documentation of analysis results.
- Validate and Improve LOPA Processes – Conduct reviews, audits, and continuous improvement of LOPA methodologies and outcomes.
Certification Eligibility Criteria:
To apply for certification from The American Institute of Business and Management (AIBM) and its allied institutions, candidates must meet the following criteria:

And/or
- 0–4.9 years relevant experience for Professional level (CLPAP)™, or 5+ years for Manager level (CLPAM)™.
Note: Applicants who do not hold a Bachelor’s degree but possess exceptional professional experience and hold significant positions within their organizations in a relevant field may also be considered for certification on a case-by-case basis, subject to the approval of the AIBM evaluation committee.
Certifying Examination:
- To be certified as CLPAP™/CLPAM™, student should take up a 1.5 hours online exam conducted by AIOGM.
- The qualifying exam would consist of 50 multiple choice questions, testing core certification modules.
- Professionals with relevant experience and other qualifying criteria may be exempted from the examination.
